State Bicycles Bike Parts & Accessories
State Bicycles is a U.S.-based manufacturer of city bikes, primarily fixies, with a handful of geared bikes available. The company also makes a number of accessories, some clothing, and swag, offering the whole catalogue online, along with select accessories and gear from other manufacturers.
Started in 2009 by a trio of avid urban riders, State Bicycles has steadily built up a reputation for solid, inexpensive single-speed bikes. Now available world-wide, the catalogue contains tens of models, including skinny-wheeled street rides, fat bikes, cyclocrossers, townies, and more.
The fixies are the flagship of the line. Hewing closely to one design, the majority of the models include bullhorn bars, flat top tubes, and a single fixed gear. No brake calipers, no derailleurs, just pure single-speed joy. Styles range from the tasteful Bel Aire to the bright Allouette. Each model may be customized, with options offered for handlebar, pedal and saddle.
The townies are far more relaxed, and are offered in standard and deluxe models, the standard equipped with fenders and a chainguard, the deluxe adding front and rear racks. Some novelty invades the townie line: State has teamed up with a brewery to offer a beer-transporting bike, bottle opener included.
The 'crossers are equipped with brakes, and old-school single-action levers. The fat bikes add a coaster brake, step down to a modest gear, and lower the seat cluster; a second model is geared, and includes disc brakes, still coming in well under $1000. Actually, with the exception of the RockShox-equipped 29er mountain bikes, every State bicycle comes in under $1000, with many close to half that.
Lots of accessories, clothes, and random swag, from jerseys to rucksacks to lights to stickers, are for sale, some branded with State's logo. A full riding kit can be acquired to go with a new State bike. Inexpensive, available worldwide, with a catalogue chock-full of pictures, State is worth a look.
